Seven Secrets of a Successful Job Interview

4. Don't monopolize the conversation.
Keep the give-and-take fairly even.

No one likes to talk to a person who monopolizes the conversation. To be enjoyable, any conversation must be fairly balanced. Ideally, you should spend half of your time listening and the other half talking.

Much like a first date, an interview can be flattering. The interviewer has taken their time to get to know you and is keenly interested in you. This unique situation can lead you into inadvertently carrying on and on with your answer.

The worst thing you can do is to answer a question in an extended, long-winded manner. You need to keep your answers to the point and make sure that you allow the interviewer time to tell you about the job and the company. It is also good to find out something about the interviewer. Often it is better to show an interest in the company or interviewer rather than monopolizing the conversation with entertaining stories.
